TABLESCAPE TIPS

Interior designer Brian J. McCarthy loves to entertain. And whether it's a detailed celebration planned months in advance or a dinner party pulled together the day-of, setting the table always comes first. Here, he shows us how he sets up for a holiday party with a look inspired by his interiors and his guests.

 Avoid obtrusive centerpieces. If your flower arrangement is so elaborately large that you can't see the guests across the table, then it's time to downsize. McCarthy adores this glass tree sculpture he found in Paris. It's tall, but its translucence allows for cross-table conversations.

STEP 1: BRING IN A COLORFUL TABLECLOTH

For the holidays, start with a backdrop of color. Here, McCarthy opts for a deep plum tablecloth that richly complements his dining room's lacquered brown walls and vibrant artwork.

STEP 2: GO BIG (AND COLORFUL) WITH FLOWERS

Incorporate even more color with deeply-hued arrangements. The arrangement to the left includes cabbages, peonies and berries. And just to be safe, always buy more flowers than you think you really need. It's best to have too much than not enough.

STEP 3: USE WHAT YOU HAVE

McCarthy, an avid art collector and traveler, accumulates tabletop gems at his own pace.
In fact, he admits that he's been searching for the perfect glass plates and bowls for years. Take a cue from the designer and don't rush—only buy things when you truly love them. The pieces inside your china cabinet should reflect your life. Flatware and chargers, Lapparra. Plates, Alberto Pinto. Wine glasses, Baccarat. Water glasses, Deborah Ehrlich.

Another Christmas Bliss to share is my own Christmas Tree which was put together by my son, Chris and his Girlfriend, Milan.

This was the best Christmas Decoration we have had in this house! The tree shape was put together with tree limps attached to a pegboard. SIMPLE AND TOOK UP HARDLY ANY ROOM AT ALL! The tree limbs smell nice too!

This will be our last Christmas here for in March we are relocating back to Mayer, where all our children graduated from high school.
